Claws
What it is
"Claw" is a term of art for a category of personal AI agent: a system that runs continuously on hardware the owner controls (often a home Mac Mini or small server), talks over ordinary messaging channels rather than a chat UI, holds persistent memory, and can both follow direct instructions and wake itself on a schedule to act without being prompted. OpenClaw was the breakout implementation; "Claw" is the generic noun for the category it spawned, covering smaller and competing projects like NanoClaw, ZeroClaw, IronClaw, and PicoClaw.
Why it's emerging now
OpenClaw's rapid growth in late 2025/early 2026 showed that a persistent, self-hosted, messaging-native agent behaves differently enough from a chat-triggered coding agent or a cloud-hosted assistant to need its own name. Andrej Karpathy's February 2026 commentary — he bought a Mac Mini to run one, while warning that OpenClaw's large, "vibe-coded" codebase was under active attack — framed Claws as a new layer sitting on top of ordinary LLM agents, adding orchestration, scheduling, and persistence. Simon Willison picked up the term the same day as the field's working noun for the category, distinct from any single implementation. It's a backfill: the term cleared two independent sources the day it was coined, eight months ago, but it never made it onto your ledger, and by September 2026 Willison was already noting the category was being rebranded again ("personal agents," "general agents") — worth catching before "Claw" itself fades into legacy usage.
How it relates to what you know
It's a deployment-shape sibling to "AI agents / agentic workflows" and "Agent harnesses" already on your ledger, not a new reasoning or model technique: a Claw is specifically self-hosted and always-on, reached over messaging, with its own schedule-triggered autonomy — closer in kind to "Computer use" (defined by where/how an agent acts) than to anything about model architecture. It's also a useful anchor for "Agent sprawl," already on your ledger, since the proliferation of Claw variants (Nano-, Zero-, Iron-, Pico-) is a concrete instance of that pattern.
