Agentic engineering
What it is
Agentic engineering is the practice of running software delivery through teams of AI agents that hold defined roles, shared memory, and a unified observability layer, with a human directing architecture and providing oversight rather than writing code directly. It's framed as the successor stage to vibe coding: instead of one person prompting one model turn by turn, agents are treated as digital team members carrying work across the full pipeline — planning, implementation, testing, and review — under a coordination model built for that purpose.
Why it's emerging now
Andrej Karpathy coined the term on February 4, 2026, revisiting his own "vibe coding" coinage from a year earlier and arguing that professional use had already moved past casual, unsupervised prompting toward agent-driven work done with real scrutiny. LangChain formalized the term on April 17, 2026 in a blog post pairing it with a concrete stack — LangGraph for orchestration, LangSmith for observability and evals, LangMem for persistent agent memory — and it has since been picked up as course and curriculum language (Udacity's "Agentic AI Engineer" program) and analyzed by outside observers including Sequoia Capital. It surfaces on this sweep now because search continues to index and re-explain it months after it coined and corroborated, not because anything new happened this week — a backfill rather than fresh news.
How it relates to what you know
It's a step up from multi-agent orchestration / subagents and agent harnesses, already on your ledger: those describe the mechanics of running several agents together, while agentic engineering names the resulting professional practice — treating a fleet of agents as a team with roles and shared memory, applied specifically to the software delivery pipeline. It's also the explicit successor framing to vibe coding, the same relationship loop engineering, eval engineering, and graph engineering have to each other as successive namings of agent-practice maturity already on your ledger.
